UK Minister of Religion Visa Application

UK Minister of Religion Visa (T2) – An Overview

If you have received a job offer from a religious organisation in the UK, such as for the role of a minister of religion, missionary, or a member of a religious order, you may be eligible to apply for the Minister of Religion visa (T2). This visa permits you to live and serve within a faith community in the UK, subject to meeting certain eligibility conditions. One must be sponsored by a licensed UK religious body that will issue a certificate of sponsorship and provide details about your role and salary.

Application Process and Timelines

You are allowed to apply for this visa up to 3 months before your intended start date in the UK, as mentioned in your certificate of sponsorship. Typically, applicants applying from outside the UK can expect a decision within 3 weeks. There are priority and super priority services available for quicker processing, at an additional fee. Application fees vary depending on whether you're applying from outside or inside the UK, with healthcare surcharge applicable separately.

Duration of Stay and Settlement Route

This visa allows you to stay in the UK for a maximum of 3 years and 1 month, or for the period specified on your certificate of sponsorship plus an additional 14 days, whichever is shorter. You can apply to extend your visa and may be eligible to apply for permanent settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) after 5 continuous years in the UK under this route. Settlement allows you to live, work, and study freely in the UK, with access to certain public benefits.

What You Can Do on This Visa

As a T2 Minister of Religion visa holder, you can work full-time for your sponsoring religious institution in the designated role. You may also engage in voluntary work, pursue studies (provided they don’t interfere with your main job), take on secondary employment under certain conditions, and travel in and out of the UK. You can also bring your dependants – spouse and children – subject to eligibility. However, you are not permitted to access public funds or own more than 10% of your sponsor’s shares (unless earning above the prescribed threshold).

Eligibility and Documentation Requirements

To qualify, you must have a valid certificate of sponsorship, demonstrate knowledge of English (at CEFR level B2 or higher), and maintain minimum funds of £1,270 for self-support (unless exempt). You also need to be 18 years or above and must provide documents such as a valid passport, proof of English language skills, financial documents, tuberculosis test results (if applicable), and details of your travel history. If your documents are not in English or Welsh, certified translations are mandatory.

How to Apply

Applications for this visa must be submitted online. During the application process, you will be required to visit a visa application centre to provide your fingerprints and photograph (biometric data). Your sponsoring organisation must ensure that your job complies with the UK’s wage regulations and working hour norms. Always refer to the latest guidance to check if you need to submit any additional documents based on your personal circumstances.

The Home Office will carefully scrutinise an application for a Skilled Worker visa. If it does not consider that the visa application is a genuine or if it considers that any of the other requirements have not been met, the application will fall for refusal. It is therefore essential that the application is prepared thoroughly and carefully.
