UK Charity Worker Visa Application

UK Charity Worker Visa – An Overview

Planning to work with a registered charity in the UK? The Temporary Work – Charity Worker visa allows individuals to come to the UK for voluntary, unpaid roles supporting charitable work. This visa is intended for those who are genuinely looking to contribute to a cause rather than seeking paid employment. Do note, this visa category has replaced the previous T5 (Temporary Worker – Charity Worker) route.

Certificate of Sponsorship Requirement

To be eligible, you must receive a Certificate of Sponsorship from a UK-based charitable organisation that holds a sponsorship licence. The nature of the work must relate directly to the organisation's charitable mission. This certificate contains all necessary details about your voluntary position and must be used within three months from the date it is issued.

Application Timeline & Processing

You may apply up to 3 months before your intended start date in the UK, which should match the date on your certificate of sponsorship. The standard decision timeframe is around 3 weeks if applying from outside the UK. You will be asked to verify your identity and submit your documents either online or by attending a visa application centre. Priority processing may be available at an additional cost.

Fees and Financial Requirements

The application fee is £319 per applicant, and you must also pay the healthcare surcharge of £1,035 per year. Additionally, you must demonstrate sufficient funds—at least £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days—unless your sponsor confirms that they will cover your expenses for the initial month. This financial requirement extends to dependants as well, should they accompany you.

Permitted Activities & Limitations

While in the UK under this visa, you are allowed to study and engage in your assigned voluntary role. You may also take up a second similar job in the same sector for up to 20 hours weekly. However, you are not allowed to receive a salary, accept permanent employment, or access public funds. You can bring eligible dependants—your spouse or partner and children—subject to fulfilling the relevant conditions and financial thresholds.

Documents Required & How to Apply

Key documents include your valid passport, certificate of sponsorship, proof of funds, and any applicable medical or relationship evidence. All documents not in English or Welsh must be accompanied by certified translations. The application is to be submitted online, and the process may include biometric submission depending on your nationality and passport type. Each dependant must file a separate application using your GWF or UAN reference.

The Home Office will carefully scrutinise an application for a long term or temporary work visa. If it does not consider that the visa application is a genuine or if it considers that any of the other requirements have not been met, the application will fall for refusal. It is therefore essential that the application is prepared thoroughly and carefully.
We are experienced in preparing work visa applications to ensure a successful outcome and will provide expert guidance and assistance to you throughout the process.
