UK Student Visa Application from India
Introduction to UK Student Visa
If you’re an Indian student aged 16 or above and planning to pursue studies in the United Kingdom, you’ll need to apply for a UK Student Visa. This visa allows you to enrol in an eligible course with an approved UK educational institution, provided you meet specific academic, financial, and English language criteria.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for a UK Student Visa, you must have a confirmed offer from a licensed student sponsor. You must also prove you have sufficient funds to pay for your tuition and living costs and demonstrate your proficiency in English. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must submit parental consent as part of your application.
When to Apply
If applying from India, you can submit your visa application up to six months before your course starts. Most applicants receive a decision within three weeks. If you are already in the UK, you may apply up to three months before your new course begins, ensuring your current visa does not expire before you apply.
Duration of Stay
The length of stay granted under a Student Visa depends on the course level and previous study in the UK. Generally, students pursuing degree-level education can remain in the UK for up to 5 years, while those studying below degree level may stay up to 2 years.
Extending Your Stay
You may apply to extend your Student Visa to continue further studies, switch to this visa from another category if eligible, or apply for a Graduate Visa after completing your course to stay and work in the UK for at least 2 years.
Arriving in the UK
You may enter the UK before your course commences—up to 1 week in advance for courses shorter than 6 months, or up to 1 month before if your course is longer. However, you must not travel before the start date indicated on your visa.
Visa Application Fees
The visa application fee for Indian nationals is £524, whether applying from outside or within the UK. Additionally, you’ll need to pay the healthcare surcharge, the amount of which depends on the length of your visa.
Dependants
You may be eligible to bring your spouse or children to the UK as dependants. Each person must apply separately and pay the applicable visa fees and healthcare surcharge.
Permitted Activities
With a Student Visa, you are allowed to study and may work part-time depending on your course and schedule. You may also take up a full-time role as a student union sabbatical officer. However, you cannot claim public benefits, work as a professional sportsperson, or be self-employed.
Courses and Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS)
You need to be enrolled in a full-time course at an approved institution. Once accepted, the institution will issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), a unique reference number you must include in your visa application. You must apply within six months of receiving your CAS.
Eligible Study Programs
Accepted courses include full-time programs at RQF levels 3 to 8, English language courses at CEFR level B2 or higher, or part-time postgraduate-level courses (RQF 7+). You may also apply as a student union sabbatical officer.
Financial Requirements
Indian applicants must show they have enough funds to cover their tuition and living expenses. For courses in London, you need £1,483 per month (for up to 9 months); for courses outside London, you need £1,136 per month. If boarding at a residential school, refer to the boarding fees listed on your CAS.
Exemptions from Financial Proof
You may be exempt from providing financial proof if you’ve been living in the UK on a valid visa for at least 12 months or if you’re from a country under the differential evidence requirement. However, UKVI may still request documentation in some cases.
English Language Requirement
You must prove your English language ability through an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) or show qualifications that meet UK standards. The required level is CEFR B1 for courses below degree level and B2 for degree-level and above.
Who is Exempt from English Testing?
Applicants from certain English-speaking countries or those who completed a UK-taught degree are exempt from providing English language proof. Canadian nationals and students part of U.S. university study abroad programs may also be exempt.
Documents Required
Typical documents include your current passport, CAS letter, proof of funds, English language proof, tuberculosis test results (if required), and consent letters for under-18 applicants. Additional documents may be needed based on your situation.
Application Process
You must apply online for a Student Visa. You’ll either use the UK Immigration: ID Check app or visit a visa application centre to submit biometric data and verify your identity, depending on your passport type.
